Wakomu, I call him Mu, has found more than 300 lost cats in his ten year career, and he is still going strong. We have gone on searches from Blaine to Portland, from Belfair to Ellensburg. A couple of years ago, Mu took a sabbatical because he was suffering anxiety while going to searches. It seems that he was picking up on my mood after we had done several searches in a row where Mu found evidence that a coyote had killed the lost cat. The families of these deceased cats can understandably be very distraught, and I think it was taking its toll on Mu and I. We concentrated on just having fun while continuing to go to weekly training for six months. Mu has made a full recovery from that anxiety and has found many cats since returning to duty.
Mu has the best snore in the world. He may be the world’s greatest cat-detection dog, I don’t know, but he most certainly is the World’s Greatest Snorer. He sleeps beside me, and once Mu starts snoring, it is impossible to stay awake more than five minutes.
Mu is a beautiful creature, very photogenic. I have thousands of pictures of him. He doesn’t necessarily like to have his picture taken, and sometimes taking his picture has been a challenge. Tino and Fozzie like having their picture taken. I’ve noticed that I get the best pictures of Mu while we are out on a search. He really comes alive when we are working.
Mu is my son, my partner, and my friend. If such a thing were possible, I would be very happy to be reincarnated as Mu’s dog, and he could be my human. I would only hope I could be as good a dog as Mu is.
