Our native Douglasfir can grow 400 feet tall, so it seems a shame to prune it into a shrub. However, if you must have a privacy hedge, Douglasfir is far superior to laurel or holly. English laurel and English holly are invasive, their berries spread by birds. They can wreck native forests if the owner of a laurel hedge doesn’t keep it pruned and free of berries. If someone fails to prune a hedge of Douglasfir, it will just get really big. It won’t wreck our environment. Native cedar also makes a great hedgerow.
